Michael Bryant is a London-based composer and guitarist whose work moves between contemporary string quartet writing and jazz guitar composition.
His current project — the elemental Pyrydro suite, performed by the Sylva Quartet — is a four-part cycle exploring Water, Fire, Air and Earth as musical territory. As a guitarist, Bryant draws on the vocabulary of art rock and modern jazz, exploring extended tonality and atmospheric texture. He also records and releases work as Panda Kosmos, available elsewhere on Spotify.
Across both practices, his writing draws on the string language of Béla Bartók and the harmonic and rhythmic worlds of jazz guitarists Nels Cline and Grant Green.
The Pyrydro elemental suite explores the four classical elements through a contemporary string quartet lens. Each movement is conceived as part of a single arc, moving from Water through Fire and Air to Earth. The project sits at the intersection of minimalism, spectralism, and the extended techniques of the contemporary chamber music tradition.
Each movement inhabits its element rather than illustrating it — Water is porous and drifting, Fire is percussive and unrelenting, Air is weightless and suspended, Earth is dense and low-gravity.
The suite is released in movements throughout 2026, culminating in a complete four-track EP on 14 August 2026 — available on all major streaming platforms and as a physical CD (Four Page Printed Digipack, limited run).
